UHill First Week Schedule

Dear UHill Parents:

To refresh everyone’s memory, here is the schedule for the first week of school from the last school newsletter from last year.

Here we go! We hope everyone has a great school year.

– Tim and Denise

PAC Co-Chairs

—————————-

The first day of classes for September 2013 is Tuesday, September 3rd. Grade 1 – 7 students will return to last year’s class at 9:00 a.m. on the first day of school. The children will only be in school for about 45 minutes on this day. New intermediate students (Grade 4 – 7) are asked to go to the Multi Purpose Room. New primary students (Grade 1 – 3), please go to the library.
Students will remain in these classes on Wednesday, September 4th. On Thursday, September 5th students will report to last year’s teacher and then move into grade groupings for the day.

Class lists for the 2013/14 school year will be posted on the school’s main doors late Thursday afternoon. Students will go to their new classes at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, September 6th.

New Kindergarten students have received a letter from the school outlining their schedule for the first week.

Welcome Back to UHill

Dear UHill Parents,

Welcome back to school! I hope you all had a fun summer and were able to enjoy the fantastic weather.

School starts on Tuesday, September 3. Students will be in session from 9:00 – 9:45 am. Please be aware that we have over 300 families with students at UHill and only 10 parking spots available for cars at the school.

Why don’t you use the opportunity to walk or ride a bike to school? Kids need daily exercise and the route back and forth to school can be a relaxing time to talk. The sidewalks and bike ways to UHill provide a very safe path to school and less car congestion would reduce everyone’s frustration. UHill offers plenty of bike parking. Last year, I counted more than 100 bikes locked to the rail in front of the school. Let’s see if we can break that record this year.

If you must drive, the University Endowment Lands administration will permit you to park on Acadia Road north of Chancellor Blvd on Sept. 3 and 4. You can then walk down the hill to the school. For details and restrictions, see the email below.

See you on Tuesday,

– Tim Dow

Dear Tim and Denise,

We hope that each of you is enjoying the wonderful summer. This past May, over 185 students and volunteers participated in our first ever Walk’n Roll to School Celebration Week, logging over 480 trips to school. Following this success, UTown@UBC and the UNA are starting off the school year with some safety and education initiatives to help get the UTown@UBC community walking and rolling back to school!

As part of an ongoing effort to promote safe and sustainable transportation within the campus community, the following initiatives will be in place in early September:

· RCMP Speed Watch: Speeders beware! RCMP will be out enforcing the posted speed limits, so slow down and drive safely!

· Crossing monitors will be stationed on 16th Avenue and Chancellor Boulevard during the first week of school to help students learn and practice safe crossing behaviour en route to school.

· Safety and education materials will be available at the UNA office, Old Barn Community Centre, and online at utown.ubc.ca/walknroll to help parents discuss safe walking and cycling behaviour with their children.

Look for more information on upcoming Walk’n Roll to School initiatives throughout the Fall.

Safety improvements continue to be implemented along W. 16th Avenue; when this project is complete, the following improvements will be in place:

•A new traffic-calming roundabout at East Mall and W. 16th Avenue;
•Pedestrian activated amber flashing lights and audible messaging at the mid-block crossing;

· Sidewalks and bike lanes between East Mall and Wesbrook Mall;

· Bus stops and shelters;

· Flashing orange lights and pedestrian crossing signs at the roundabouts;

· Enhanced lighting at the mid-block crossing and along the corridor.

For more information about safety improvements along W. 16th Avenue, please visit transportation.ubc.ca.

If you would like to help support Walk’n Roll to School safety and education initiatives this fall by becoming a volunteer, please contact Qiuning Wang at qwang@oldbarn.ca. Please feel free to share this information with parents at University Hill Elementary School and University Hill Secondary School, so that we may continue to work together towards encouraging active, sustainable transportation on campus.

We wish you a wonderful end of summer, and hope to see you and your children walking and rolling to school in the fall!

Sincerely,

Carole Jolly
