3. Motion to adopt Minutes of April 7th, 2016 meeting. Moved by Amal and seconded by Ling.

4. Principal’s Report (Val)

  • The Earth Day BBQ and Stream of Dreams went smoothly and got very positive feedback. Thanks for all the hard wok put in by school staff and parent volunteers.
  • Welcome to Kindergarten had a wonderful turnout of 64 families.
  • The floorball program is currently ongoing at the school.
  • On May 3rd, there would be activities organized for 3 year olds “ Ready-Set-Learn”.
  • The VSB budget approval has been delayed. The deadline for fixing the budget is June 30th.
  • Tuesday May 17th, there is a meeting scheduled at Magee Secondary School, 7:00pm, regarding the redesigned curriculum and Val is going with three U-hill parents (Amal EL-Naggar, Nancy Brown, and Lisa Colonna).
  • Regarding VSB online access, Jorden clarified that the Board approved the Acceptable Use of Technology Policy (and regulation) at their last Board meeting. There are guidelines being written to guide employees and students to do the right thing to be in compliance   with the policy and regulations.  There will be an implementation process schools will be directed to follow, this fall.
  • Calendar for the next three school years has been drafted. U-hill is doing all the PD days and school closure days as proposed by VSB.
  • On Sports Day May 19th, Dismissal is at 2pm. Pizza lunch can be ordered if the child is not enrolled in the hot lunch program. The deadline is Friday May 6th.
  • PAC workshop on internet safety went smoothly. Thanks for Angela, Kshamta and Jorden for organizing it.
  • The Earth day BBQ proceeds has been donated to the Owl Society. Thanks Kate for organizing this.
  • 50 Salmon have been released at Spanish Banks by Div 2 students. Thanks Melody and Jorden for the great efforts.
  • There will be a VSB wide Earthquake drill “the Big One at 2” on Thursday. Parents are encouraged to pick up their children at 2 from the big field and practice the procedures.
  • U-hill Lego Robotics Club placed 8th in the recent robotics competition in Chilliwack. Well done, Uhill team.
  • 4. Thanks to Aaron for setting up the U-hill Coding club. The club is started on April 28th. 50 applications were received and 20 was accepted. With 13 Kindergarten /Grade 1 kids.
  • 5. The grocery cards fund raising collected $22200 and $1700 is expected to be raised in this round.
  • 5. Liron and Aaron are going to set a survey on the current PAC.
  • 6. Next PAC meeting is June 9th, 2016 (Nomination, voting and transition to new PAC).

  3. Principal’s Report (Val)
  • School fees for 2016-2017 school year have been finalized, including $25 school supply fee, $7 planner fee as requested by classroom teacher, $12 performance fee, $10 activity fee and $10 workbook fee.
  • Calendar for the next three school years has been drafted. Uhill is doing all the PD days and school closure days as proposed by VSB.
  • On Sports Day May 19th, Dismissal is at 2pm.
  • Work done in Melody’s class on Salmon Cycles was published in Connections.
  • VSB budget proposed cuts in library and resource and other incremental cut. Details have not been released yet. We are not expecting big changes.
  • VSB strategic plan is posted on the website and parents feedback is welcome. Val is going to schedule a meeting with parents regarding the plan and Amal is going to coordinate on this. The due date is end of April.
  • Jorden the library teacher is welcoming parents feedback on the cut of library resource. A gathering will be held in Mount Pleasant by Friends of School libraries in April 12. Parents are welcome to join.
  • At Uhill, we value Jorden’s work beyond his librarian duties.
  • In mid May there is a meeting at VSB regarding the redesigned curriculum. Val is going to put out a date to meet with parents.
  • April 15 and 18 are PD days.
  • Parents of Grade 4 students are encouraged to do the survey on FSA. The PIN is on the envelope.
    1. Jenny Chen has kindly agreed to act as our PAC treasurer from now until the end of the school year and it was moved by Angela and seconded by Amal to approve.
    2. Thanks to Aaron for setting up the Uhill Coding club. The club is starting April 28th, from 3:10 to 4pm after school until June 9th. Cost is $20 per person and the club will take 20 students on a first come first serve basis. Please email uhillcodingclub@gmail.com to register.
    3. 6.Kate has listed the volunteer duties for the Earth day BBQ and Saeed is going to coordinate. Parent volunteers are need on April 21 and 22.
    4. 7. Jorden and an invited speaker from UBC on online safety will talk about Digital literacy, online safety and VSB resources on April 25 or 26 (dates to be finalized). PAC will cover $100 for the gift cards to the speakers and $80 childminding fees. It was motioned by Aaron and seconded by Amal to approve the expense.
    5. No traffic safety update.
    6. The next round of grocery card fundraising is starting soon.
    7. The Minecraft club officially closed and will move to Norma Rose Point next year and students form Uhill are welcome to join.
    8. It was proposed by Rob to use generic gmail account for class parents for communication purposes.
    9. A parent proposed to have multicultural event at the school such as potluck or talent show. This is going to be discussed in September.
    10. Next PAC meeting is our Annual General Meeting and parents are welcome to nominate executives for next year and an election will be held. The date is set to be Monday, May 2nd 2016.
