a restful, enjoyable and safe holiday season.
WINTER VACATION DATES
Our school will close for Winter Vacation on Friday, December 16th . . . Students will be dismissed at 3:01 pm on this day. School will re-open on Tuesday, January 3rd at 9:00 am.
SO LONG AND BEST WISHES TO . . .
We are sad to have to say good bye to Jonathan Weresch, our Vice Principal, who will not be returning to the school after the Winter Break. Jonathan has been assigned to Queen Victoria Annex beginning January 2012. Our most sincere thanks for all of your efforts on behalf of the children at University Hill. Jonathan will be sorely missed, and we wish him the very best in all future endeavors.
Also leaving is Ms. Maggie Jackson, who is expecting her first child in January. Maggie has been an amazing addition to our staff and we wish her all happiness in motherhood. We look forward to Maggie’s return at the conclusion of her maternity leave.
A WARM WELCOME TO . . .
We welcome Ms. Shannon MacDonald as the new Vice Principal at University Hill. Shannon has been a Resource Teacher at the school for the past 5 years and brings with her a wealth of knowledge about the school. Congratulations, Shannon, on your promotion and new role!
Ms. Jennifer Appleton will be joining us to enrol our Grade 6 class. Ms Appleton has recently spent time at Queen Mary Elementary School teaching Grade 6/7. We look forward to welcoming her to University Hill.
HOLIDAY SING ALONG AND CONCERT
What would the holiday season at University Hill be without a concert and a song along? We had both this year and a huge thanks goes out go to the University Hill staff who organized such a phenomenal concert around the holiday festivities at the school. This event could not have happened without the generosity of spirit and the hard work that exemplifies our staff. Thank you again, to the organizers and to those who participated with their classes.
Additional thanks to Greg and Louise Weir and friends for organizing a fabulous afternoon of song to kick off the holiday season this past Tuesday. This has become a much anticipated annual event at the school. The children look forward each year to this rousing afternoon of holiday singing which would not happen without Greg and Louise volunteering their time and effort to put on the event and lead the singing.
REGISTRATION FOR 2012-13
Just a reminder that registration for the 2012/13 has already begun. Registration is necessary for any child who is going to start attending University Hill Elementary School in September of 2012. If your child was born in Canada, please come to the school to register. If your child was not born in Canada, you must register at the District Reception and Placement Center (DRPC). Please phone the DRPC (604-713-5999) for more information, or pick up an information pamphlet at the school.
REGISTRATION PROCEDURES FOR VANCOUVER SCHOOLS
Again this year, the Vancouver School Board is implementing a lottery system for registration for the 2012-13 school year. Applications for all Kindergarten programs (including regular English, French Immersion, Montessori and Fine Arts) and for Grade 1-7 for the 2012-13 school year will be received between Nov. 1, 2011 and Jan. 31, 2012.
If, at January 31, there are more applications received than space available in any program or school, a lottery will be held to select the students who are accepted. Students not selected from the draw will be added to a wait list maintained by the school.
All families who submit an application prior to January 31, 2012 will be given notification of the school their child will be attending by March 31, 2012 This includes wait listed students who were unable to secure a spot during the lottery process.
Applications received after January 31 will not be considered until all in-catchment students who submitted an application prior to January 31 have been placed. Late applicants, including siblings of in-catchment students already enrolled in the school, will be added to the end of the school’s wait list. Late in-catchment sibling applicants will have priority consideration over other late in-catchment applicants.
This process replaces the first-come, first-served procedure and eliminates the need for families to arrive early on the first day of registration.
A family can register their child(ren) for Kindergarten if the student will reach the age of five years on or before December 31 of the calendar year. For the 2012-13 school year the child must be born in 2007.
Just like the phone, Instant Messaging (or MSN) is very popular for communicating with friends and discussing homework and school projects. Just as you would make sure you knew who your child was going out with; make sure you know who your child is talking to on the internet by reviewing their buddy list with them.
Painful rumors, stinging gossip and other put downs can cause a lot of emotional stress for some children – especially because so many of them are visiting and posting things on sites such as MySpace.com. 25% of Canadian children and teens have had mean, hateful and/or threatening things said to them over the internet or their cell phone. Please talk to your child(ren) about this issue.
What can kids and their parents do? Here are some tips from BeSafeOnline.org:
- children should always tell their parents if they are being bullied or have been upset
- save all examples of bullying by saving or printing email or MSN histories
- if an email or message is particularly disturbing or breaks the law, call the police
- check on your school’s anti bullying policy and whether it addresses bullying via computers and cell phones
